Volcano school

DEFINITION

Non-native Hawaiian artists "who painted dramatic nocturnal scenes of Hawaii's erupting volcanoes." Most frequently subjects were volcanoes on the Island of Hawaii, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Jules Tavernier is the biggest name associated with the 'school', and other painters were Constance Cumming, Charles Furneaux, David Hitchcock, Titian Ramsey Peale, Joseph Strong, Lionel Walden and William Twigg-Smith.
