DEFINITION

An Italian word for view, it is used in fine art as a description of a large-scale painting of a vista, usually a cityscape. Artists associated with the term include Johannes Vermeer with his "View of Delft" and Giovanni Pannini, who became noted for his "vedutas" of classical ruins.
