Scottish colourists

DEFINITION

A group of abstract, fauve painters from Scotland, they exhibited in the 1920s and 1930s and received little fanfare. During World War II, their work was mostly forgotten, but from the late 20th century has made a comeback. The forerunner of the group was William McTaggart (1835-1910), and active members were John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell, Samuel Peploe and Leslie Hunter.
