DEFINITION

A 19th century art movement in Italy, its exponents defied the strictures of The Naples Academy of Fine Arts, and depicted recognizable scenes, which became generally popular. Common subjects were Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii and local landmarks. Artists associated with the movement are the Carelli family---Achille, Raffaele, Gonsalvo and Gabriel. Source: V.
