Royal west of england academy

DEFINITION

Located in Bristol, England, it was the first art gallery in Bristol, and was financed in 1849 by the Bristol Society of Artists and money from the will of Ellen Sharples, portrait painter. In 1913, King George V granted the institution its Royal title. It became an art collecting, teaching and exhibiting institution, which in 1966 became part of the University of the West of England School of Visual Studies.
