Royal hibernian academy

DEFINITION

Located in Dublin, Ireland, it is a source of education and exhibition for artists, and is funded by the local arts council as well as by exhibitions and patrons. It was founded in 1823 by 39 artists who petitioned the government for a charter of incorporation. It included a National School of Art, and landscape painter, William Ashford, served as first president. As a result of challenges by modernist leaning artists, it expanded its mission in the 1970s to reflect both traditional and "innovative approaches to the visual arts."
