DEFINITION

An institution dating back to 1754 when it was a gift to King Frederik V on his 31st birthday, it remains in its original building, the Charlottenborg Palace. It is the oldest place of higher learning in Denmark, and, with emphasis on combining research with creative arts, offers classes in painting, sculpture, drawing and architecture. The Danish Ministry of Culture administers the Academy. The first Director was Nicolai Eigtved, and famous sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen served in that position from 1833 to 1844.
