Pygmalion

DEFINITION

A Cypriot sculptor in a legend that Ovid retold in his Metamorphoses. Pygmalion fell in love with a marble statue he'd carved of a beautiful woman named Galatea. Pygmalion prayed to Venus that the figure would come to life. When Venus granted Pygmalion's wish, the statue of Galatea came to life and returned his love.(pr. pig-MAY-lee-ən)
