Media art - video art

DEFINITION

An American art movement beginning in the 1970s directed towards mass media and using television, commercial posters, videos and billboards. The term Media Art, in this context, does not reference media in the traditional use of the word as it relates to oil, bronze, etc. Media Art is a descendant of Pop Art and the artists tend to be highly critical of mass media, presenting it primarily as a bad influence, a propaganda tool. Media Artists include Chris Burden and Jenny Holzer. See Video Art. Source: Robert Atkins, "Art Speak"
