Italic

In typography, slanted letters. They were first produced in 1506 by the Italian designer Aldus Manutius, who slanted letters to give words special emphasis. Italics now have much the same purpose: adding force to certain words and setting off titles from surrounding text. see thumbnail to rightHere, the first line of text is plain, but the second line is italic.
