Ekphrasis

DEFINITION

The word ekphrasis comes from the Greek words “ek” which means “out” and “phrasis” which means “speak”, or more specifically to call an inanimate object by name. The definition of ekphrasis (ekphrastic) is a vivid verbal description of a visual work of art. This description can be real or imagined and is usually given as a dramatic tale. Artists began to use their own literary and artistic work to reflect on another art genre in order to illuminate what the eye might not see in the original, in a hope to elevate it and possibly even surpass it. This is what has later been called ekphrasis. According to the Poetry Foundation, "an ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art.”
