DEFINITION

Established in 1896 by Catharine Lorillard Wolfe (1828-1887) a prominent New York philanthropist, the purpose is to support and encourage New York City women artists and to gain public recognition for them through exhibitions. Wolfe was a collector of leading-edge art, and the only woman among the 106 founders of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
