DEFINITION

Predecessor of the American Art Union which formed in 1844, it was organized in 1839 by James Herring of New York City to "promote the fine arts by exhibitions and the reproduction of paintings. This concept had originated in Germany and spread to Great Britain." Members in addition to Herring included John Gadsby Chapman, John Woodhouse Audubon, and James Henry Bears.
